Is a Championship Possible for the Lakers This Season?

Greetings I would like the chime in on the state of the Los Angeles Lakers and whether or not a championship could be possible much like Anthony Davis claimed was the main focus this season not the NBA MVP. Big LeBron James fan, my personal GOAT but he’s at a point in his career where he actually needs a properly built roster to be able to capture a 5th title in his illustrious career. This is not a properly built roster, there is no reliable 3-point shooter and one thing about LeBron he wins titles when he has a team with a plethora of 3-point shooters. He can’t launch from the top of the key and into the paint within 2-seconds like he did in his prime but when healthy he has shown he can still play the drive and kick game and he has made himself into a better isolation scorer as he has aged. He has never been known for beating defenders off the dribble and he seems to be doing it with more ease these days which was one area of his game you could say needed to improve. But enough about LeBron James and let’s move on to Anthony Davis who has been playing at a level over the past 6-7 games which we could only compare to a prime Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in his days with the Milwaukee Bucks when he was formally known as Lew Alcindor.

He has been absolutely phenomenal and it is odd to finally see a player who looks more like the first option over LeBron James because although Kyrie Irving and Dwyane Wade were unreal alongside him during their days together with LeBron James we knew LeBron was the guy. With Anthony Davis as Darvin Ham said prior to the season kicking off it ends and starts with him, I’ve heard LeBron James even say it when they won the championship 2020 in The Bubble and that’s the way it’s been over the past 5-6 games with Anthony Davis and it’s lead to optimism which wasn’t there early on this season. The Lakers are being written off, there is no basketball forum where I see anyone predicting the Lakers to win 2023 NBA Championship and to hear Anthony Davis has title aspirations this season really makes you question whether something could be on the horizon which we never expected from the start. I would of course be on the side that the Lakers could win the championship this season because of course me as a LeBron James fan would want to shove it in every Michael Jordan’s fan throat how LeBron became the all-time leading scorer and won a championship in the same season, it really would make the GOAT debate even more enticing but I like to be realistic.

Gauging the rest of the league it seems like the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics are separating themselves from the pack with Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokoumpo both playing at MVP levels and for some reason I just can’t count out the Philadelphia 76ers because Joel Embiid just comes across as that type of superstar who could catch lightning in a bottle and make something happen assuming James Harden and Tyrese Maxey are healthy and available. Out West when playoff time arrives we know the Warriors will lock in on both ends and as much as I dislike Stephen Curry since he robbed LeBron of at least 1 more title in Cleveland had he not allowed Kevin Durant to come over and ruin the NBA the whole Steph winning a 5th championship in a Kobe like fashion seems like a likely outcome being that this could be Steph’s last title in his illustrious career. Anyways my point here is I don’t believe the Lakers have a good enough basketball team at this very moment to get through 3 rounds in the Western Conference and take down what could be Giannis or Tatum in a Finals matchup. The only way to a a possible championship for the Lakers is if they acquire 3-point shooting at the trade deadline.

I watched the game against the Milwaukee Bucks and they looked like a championship team for that one game. Anthony Davis looked like a combination of Wilt Chamberlain/Shaquille O’Neal/Dirk Nowitzki/Kevin Durant and LeBron James effortlessly took the 4th quarter over being that Anthony Davis’s sliders were all at 100 going into the 4th quarte and Russell Westbrook was making big play after big play much like I remember Manu Ginobili doing for the San Antonio Spurs in the 2000’s. Just when you thought Tim Duncan and Tony Parker were giving you migraines all game Manu Ginobili would make clutch shot after clutch pass time and time again. The Lakers must keep Westbrook,James, and Davis together and get rid of all the clutter which seems to be becoming Kendrick Nunn,Patrick Beverley, and maybe even Troy Brown Jr who isn’t really showing the improvement I expected as a shooter based off workout videos I saw prior to his much anticipated return. I would find some way to trade for Bojan Bogdanovic being that he is rotting away in Detroit a team that is going nowhere fast with Cade Cunningham being out the rest of the season. Rob Pelinka needs to do his job practically as we enter 2023, till next time.
