LeBron James’s fanatics are crossing their fingers Anthony Davis selling his mansion wasn’t about having one foot out
of Los Angeles but if I’m Anthony Davis I am leaving the Lakers and going to San Antonio. Why? Because Tim Duncan might become the new Head Coach depending on what Gregg Popovich decides to do going forward. From the looks of it DeMar DeRozan and Lamarcus Aldrige won’t be donning Spurs uniforms next season and the only untouchable player on the roster seems to be Dejounte Murray. I know what you are thinking why would Anthony Davis leave an opportunity to grab a few titles with LeBron James and choose to partner up with Dejounte Murray in San Antonio? Well, the Lakers have a team full of players with short-term or expiring contracts in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope,Rajon Rondo,Dwight Howard,Avery Bradley, and Danny Green. No one knows what to make of Kyle Kuzma as he has proven to be a bad fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis all year long being demoted to a 6th man role. The way it’s looking going forward with LeBron being one more year older and Giannis Antetokoumpo,Kawhi Leonard,Stephen Curry,Kevin Durant,James Harden, and Russell Westbrook all looking to grab titles LeBron James will not be the best partner in crime for Anthony Davis going into the future.
So why the San Antonio Spurs? Well again it’s about having the opportunity to be coached by Tim Duncan who is the best power-forward of all-time and someone Anthony Davis reminds us of for those of us who witnessed Tim Duncan grab titles 1999,2003,2005,2007, and 2014 and dominate the NBA for two decades. Could you imagine the mentor Tim Duncan would be for Anthony Davis? Sorry Frank Vogel I admired you for coaching that Indiana Pacer defense for years in the early 2010’s which almost took down the Miami Heat Big 3 but anyone who thinks the Lakers are at the top of the West because of Frank Vogel is fooling themselves, he’s just another puppet for LeBron James. I don’t think Anthony Davis should re-up with the Lakers win or lose assuming this season resumes because at the end of the day we all know LeBron will get all the glory, yes LeBron we know you stated the offense would run through Anthony Davis but he is not obligated to run it back with you next season. The NBA is a business and Anthony Davis will be the biggest free-agent on the market. He is arguably the best defender in the game and one of the top 5 players at the moment, other than Kawhi Leonard who plays both ends of the floor at an elite level like Anthony Davis? I’ll wait.
The Spurs at the moment have a ton of contracts which will expire after next season and will have all the cap space necessary to go after Anthony Davis. So let’s just say this season gets canceled and Anthony Davis opts in to the last year of his deal just like Andre Drummond did, the Spurs can throw as much money as possible at Anthony Davis and consider bringing him over. I still believe Dejounte Murray will be a winner, he might not have the flash of a Ja Morant or Trae Young but he’s the type of guard who will be able to defend at an elite level,he is tall enough to play point guard and shooting guard,he is a superb rebounder, and will more than likely shoot the 3-ball at at least 34-38 percent his whole career. The kid has been a sponge and has learned as much as possible from Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich who won 5 titles together, he embodies everything the Spurs are about. He’s not the flashiest but he will do everything necessary which will contribute to winning and that is something which should intrigue Anthony Davis. What is Anthony Davis after in LA? Is it about one day being mentioned with the likes of a Shaquille O’Neal,Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Wilt Chamberlain who were 3 dominant Laker bigs who won titles for the Lakers? I never witnesssed Kareem or Wilt but I did see Shaquille O’Neal and I don’t see how Anthony Davis surpasses anything Shaquille O’Neal did in LA, Shaq signed a long-term deal with the Lakers but we all knew Kobe Bryant would sprout into a superstar which lead to the Lakers’s dominance in the early 2000’s.
What the NBA is about now is players taking their careers into their own hands, I saw Paul George willingly sign a 4-year $136 million dollar contract and everyone believed we’d be watching Paul George and Russell Westbrook make a run at titles and next thing you know after two consecutive 1st-round playoff exits Sam Presti pulled the plug and moved Paul George to LA. And I know we have not seen Anthony Davis and LeBron James compete in the playoffs yet let alone get eliminated but I always got the sense that Paul George did not want to disappoint Russell Westbrook after welcoming him with open arms in OKC. The NBA is a business at the end of the day and that is the way Anthony Davis should approach it, let’s just call it how it is anything Anthony Davis does alongside LeBron James won’t matter because it’s all about LeBron James and how he can further improve his legacy and give the media more ammo to convince us LeBron is better than Jordan which is absolutely comical at this point. Anthony Davis is the real reason why the Lakers are at the top of the West because we never heard MVP chatter for LeBron James last season when he was playing alongside Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball.
To conclude Anthony Davis would be the perfect fit on the San Antonio Spurs, he is a defensive anchor which would revitalize the Spurs’s franchise and give them an identity they have lacked since Kawhi Leonard requested out of San Antonio. The Spurs would have two elite defenders at the point guard and power foward position and figuring out the rest of the starting line-up won’t be complicated considering they have a wealth of young wings with sky high potential in Lonnie Walker,Keldon Johnson,Derrick White, and Luka Samanic who with the proper development could fill out the Spurs’s rotation. No one knows what Anthony Davis will ultimately decide to do with his basketball career but he is a great player who deserves to build his own legacy not someone else’s. And no I do not hate LeBron James I just think his window is closing rapidly fast and the media is trying to keep it open, if Anthony Davis wants to win and win big no man better to take you under the wing than the Big Fundamental. Tim Duncan would morph Anthony Davis into the best player in the game in my opinion because the only critique I have bout Anthony Davis is him not using his size and length in the post and playing too much like a guard, Tim Duncan will rub his IQ and decision making off on Anthony Davis and make him into a real winner. Till next time.
