Sorry Suns fans Devin Booker won’t be taking you anywhere anytime soon. I was optimistic about Monty Williams coming over to coach this
Suns team and hopefully build a contender around Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton but I just can’t see it. I remember an NBA Executive say Devin Booker will be better than Damian Lillard by the time he reaches 27 and I could not help but laugh because Devin Booker just is what he is, a scorer and not much else. Sure he has taken on point-guard duties over the past few years and averaged close to 7 assists per game and how can we forget his 72 point game in Boston which of course resulted in a loss but can he carry the Phoenix Suns places they haven’t been since Steve Nash donned a Suns uniform? I would not bet on it at all. Sure you find some legends outside the top 5 of a NBA Draft such as Kobe Bryant but Devin Booker is nowhere near Kobe Bryant as far as mentality, work ethic, and leadership goes. They were both drafted 13th overall but even though Kobe Bryant struggled early on, you saw the potential and drive in Kobe and knew it was only a matter of time before he took over as the face of the NBA. Devin Booker has only proven one thing in the NBA so far and it’s that he can score 30 to 40 points on any given night and that is all.
It has nothing to with Devin Booker lacking athleticism or being a crappy defender it’s more the mental makeup of Booker. I believe his ceiling is a second option on a championship team and the rumors have been flying around that he is bolting for the Timberwolves to team up with D’Angelo Russell and Karl Anthony-Towns as soon as his contract expires but I quite honestly wouldn’t bank on Devin Booker staying around in Phoenix the full duration of his 5-year extension which he signed not too long ago. With a trio of Russell,Booker, and Towns you’d figure the Timberwolves will more than likely become one of the top teams in the Western Conference and I don’t think that is a championship team with those three unless the Timberwolves hire a coach who can get them to buy in to playing defense and playing hard every single game and minute they are out on the court. I remember Deandre Ayton saying Devin Booker and himself could be the next Shaq and Kobe and for a second I became curious about Ayton and started watching his highlights at Arizona and I can’t picture Booker and Ayton in the Conference Finals anytime soon to be honest. I don’t see a kill streak in Ayton and he comes across as a gentle giant compared to Shaq who’s number 1 mission every single night was to dominate and punish rims, watching Shaq through his 3-peat on the Lakers was frightening to say the least, the man played possessed and annihilated any big man in his path.
Looking back in history and how Charles Barkley lead the Phoenix Suns to the Finals in 1993 and how for years Steve Nash had the Suns at the top of the West I don’t see how Devin Booker will ever put Phoenix on the map in the way those two did. I recall Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe winning 48 games 4-5 years ago with Jeff Hornacek as the head coach but due to injuries they were not able to make the playoffs. They tried a 3-guard rotation with Isaiah Thomas,Eric Bledsoe, and Goran Dragic which ended up a disaster, I just can’t see what the Phoenix Suns are trying to build Are we supposed to sit back and expect Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton to shock the NBA world next season and become a dynamic duo? I’d expect Hip-Hop and R&B to come back to what it used to be 10-15 years ago before Ayton and Booker do anything of significance in Phoenix. Let’s face it LeBron James has morphed the NBA into a soap opera where if a star becomes unhappy he can start pouting about the organization’s direction and become passive aggressive in the media by throwing out small hints which make you believe it’s only a matter time before that player bolts.
To conclude the NBA is in a hiatus at the moment as Sports have been postponed over the past month due to the Coronavirus and I did take notice of how Devin Booker did not play with his own team in some NBA 2k Player Tournament which was held not too long ago which Devin Booker won. Why would he not choose his own team? Isn’t that a sign that he’s not confident in the players he has around him? Nothing really signals to Devin Booker looking at himself as a Phoenix Sun for his whole career, at the moment most Suns fans look at Devin Booker as untouchable and the words trade and Booker don’t go together for them but if I were a Suns fan I’d be getting ready mentally for what will be his eventual exit out of Phoenix. Suns fans should come to grips with reality sooner than later, Devin Booker is not a superstar and never will be. Will he make some all-star teams? Sure, but will he be a Hall-of Famer and have his jersey in the rafters someday? Only if Kobe Bryant were alive and in his ear every single day, till next time.
