The Hawks are not competing for much this year but a top 5 pick in this coming 2019 NBA Draft. This draft does not project to be a deep draft with the
most notable lottery picks being RJ Barrett,Bol Bol,Cam Reddish, and Zion Williamson himself.
Analyzing the Hawks roster you could see Trae Young,John Collins, and Kevin Huerter are three players the Hawks will likely build with along with who ever they draft next year. John Collins was drafted late in the 1st round and he has become much more than just a high-flying dunker, he’s shown the ability to be a versatile defender and rim protector and a floor-spacer which might result in John becoming an all-star over the next 2-3 years.
Trae Young has been one of the most scrutinized draft picks in recent memory as he looks to build a legacy comparable to Stephen Curry who he was compared to in college due to his unlimited range and ability to break down defenses with his quickness and ball handling. In college as the season progressed Trae Young became less efficient since teams were able to pounce on him since he did not have much of a supporting cast around him.
He has started off his rookie season struggling but has had several impressive games where he’s scored 20+ points and 10+ assists, new head coach Lloyd Pierce has done a great job of utilizing his playmaking ability and surreal court vision and bringing down his shots. He logged 15 points and 10 assists on 5-9 shooting from the field in a victory against the Knicks and did not even take a 3 all game. Kevin Huerter drafted late in the 1st round is not starting and has shown promise as a shooting guard who will be able to score 10-20 points a night and provide floor spacing for the Hawks.
Where does Zion fit in to this lineup? Well the league has transcended into a small ball era where a 6’8 forward would do just fine at center so long he can rebound, defend, and shoot. There will no problem with the Hawks starting John Collins at the 5 and letting Zion play the 4 position. Could you imagine the amount of lobs Zion would catch from a surreal playmaker like Trae Young? Zion is not a shooter but has the bully ball we see in superstars LeBron James and Russell Westbrook which is breathtaking. At 6’7 280 with never before seen athleticism and explosiveness Zion would have a field day against slower footed bigs in the NBA. Playing with Trae,John, and Kevin Zion will have 3 floor spacers who will keep driving lanes open for him and get him the ball since all 3 are play-makers with all around skill sets.
It’s only right the Hawks draft Zion Williamson, you want to talk about a reincarnation of former Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins well here you have him folks in Zion Williamson. Will Zion exceed Dominique Wilkins? That is something I can’t guarantee you but I would I could guarantee you is if the Hawks draft Zion Williamson is that they’ll be in the playoffs next season and will be on national television and a top the Eastern Conference by 2021.
