I have been following this kid since high-school and he was incredible, exceptional ball handling ability, craftiness, can create his own shot off the dribble and pull up from long distance with ease. He also has impeccable footwork and is a very crafty finisher with the ability to
finish with his left and right hand a lot like Derrick Rose and Kyrie Irving two of the NBA’s wizards with the ball, it’s like they carry the ball in a string.
Dennis Smith Jr statistically is not having a strong enough case for Rookie of the Year up til now with Ben Simmons,Kyle Kuzma, and Donovan Mitchell as the most likeliest candidates to win the award. But do not be so quick to disregard Dennis Smith Jr because we still have a ton of basketball left and he might just be able to miraculously carry the Mavericks to the playoffs in the West and thrust himself into contention for the award.
Kind of ironic how Mark Cuban took shots at superstar Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder saying he was not a superstar, quite frankly Mark Cuban was out of his mind with that one but he might just have drafted the second version of Westbrook. Westbrook is one of the most fearless competitors in the NBA if not the most electrifying guard in the game, Dennis Smith Jr reminds me a lot of Russell Westbrook.
Earlier in the season Dennis Smith Jr was playing in Boston versus Kyrie Irving who will be one of Smith Jr’s rivals going into the future. Dennis did some jawing at Kyrie which resulted in Kyrie turning it up a notch and carrying the Celtics to victory but you have to respect Dennis’s confidence to take it right at Kyrie Irving to show him I’m just as good as you. Of course Kyrie Irving is already a NBA champion and has way more NBA experience then Dennis but don’t be shocked if Dennis is at Kyrie’s level within 3 years, the kid wants to be great.
The Dallas Mavericks project to pick top 10 in the NBA draft and have gotten contributions from Max Kleber a young big who measures 6’11 220 pounds and has served as a solid option on defense for the Mavericks. The Mavericks currently sit outside the playoff picture but if Smith Jr can stay healthy the rest of the way I have no doubt he might carry them into the playoffs, they have the talent to get there even with Dirk on the back-end of his career. Slowly but surely the Mavericks will get back to the top and Dennis will be a huge reason why, explosiveness and shooting ability which reminds me of a former star Baron Davis.
Baron Davis never won a championship but was an elite 3 point shooter and was strong like a bull and was a really good finisher at the basket a lot like Dennis Smith Jr. When I look at Dennis Smith Jr I see a combination of Baron Davis and Derrick Rose since Smith Jr has more of a thin frame then Baron Davis and pulls up for jumpers off the dribble a lot like Baron Davis used to in his prime. Smith Jr dribbles a lot like Derrick Rose, he explodes off the pivot and dribbles the ball from hand to hand lightning quick a lot like Derrick used to during his MVP year. Dennis Smith Jr is going to be special, he’s probably in the gym getting up 3 pointers right now.
