I was thinking of just how dominant of a player Anthony Davis was at Kentucky under head coach John Calipari and I would like to believe he has what it takes to shock the NBA world and possibly win the NBA title this season.
The Pelicans have somewhat struggled to put the necessary roster around Anthony Davis for
him to compete in an era which Lebron James,Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant are currently dominating. The Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets up til now are considered favorites to come out of the West with the Cavaliers and Celtics being favorites out East. Has Dell Demps outsmarted Houston GM Daryl Morey and Bob Myers in their attempts to take over the NBA by forming two of the NBA’s most dominant duos? The Warriors lead by Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant and the Rockets by Chris Paul and James Harden.
Dell Demps has 2 superstars of his own in Demarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis who up til now have been unable to win at the highest level and become NBA Champions. Demarcus’s tenure in Sacramento lead to no playoff appearance while Anthony took a 1st round playoff exit to the Warriors 2 years ago in 4 games. They both are meshing together and know the goal is to win, Demarcus is not worried about accolades and more focused on the rings just like Anthony who has become somewhat forgotten due to several injuries.
Anthony Davis sees that the league is speaking about Giannis,Kristaps,Joel, and Ben as the future faces of the league but in the grand-scope of things none of those 4 young stars have won a ring, Anthony Davis knows a ring would separate him from the pack and toss him into consideration for best player in the league. Can he upset the Warriors,Rockets,Cavs,Spurs,Celtics, or Thunder on his way to his first title? If Demarcus and Anthony are after the same goal and have the same vision they could make history this season and Dell Demps will be remembered as the GM who changed the game.
The NBA has involved into a floor-spacing game, no hand-checking makes it easier for perimeter shooters to get their shot off so defense relies more on foot speed and ability to rotate on defense. Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins can both push the ball up the floor, score off the post, have unlimited range, and are elite finishers at the rim. Guards E-Twaun Moore and Jrue Holiday have been able to stay healthy and have played very well providing the spacing needed for Demarcus and Anthony to operate more freely and evade double teams. If Rajon Rondo can stay healthy and be that veteran leader running the offense and getting the ball to his weapons the Pelicans could be frightening.
To conclude I would like to be a bit open-minded and not just look forward to another Warriors-Cavaliers Finals, or maybe the Rockets and Celtics pull off upsets and change the expected but why is no one giving Anthony Davis’s Pelicans a chance? They have the perimeter shooting and arguably best front-court in the NBA regardless of the small-forward because Davis and Cousins are that special, if Davis and Cousins buy in on defense and focus on winning over out-shining one another the Demarcus and Anthony could be holding a Finals MVP and Larry O’Brien trophy June.
